6 categories review

Draw : 5 out of 6 stars
Flavour : 3.5 out of 6 stars
Aroma : 3.5 out of 6 stars
Construction : 5 out of 6 stars
Consistency : 4 out of 6 stars

Overall Quality : 4 out of 6 stars

Quai d’Orsay was created in the 70s when the recently elected president at the time, Valery Giscard d’Estaing, asked his minister of economy to create a French cigar. As the former president explained “France is known for its perfume, champagne, foie gras but nothing in the world of tobacco”.
La Seita, company that had the monopoly of tobacco in France, was commissioned to create a cigar for the French market. Quai d’Orsay became the third brand at that time on the market with a non Cuban name, after Davidoff and Dunhill.

The marca was present in minor markets only. Over the past decade France was able to enjoy beautiful Quai d’Orsay regional editions that became collector items.

This year, during the festival we were all pleased to attend the “relaunch” of a brand I particularly enjoy. Habanos S.A. decided to push Quai d’Orsay to a wider audience outside the French boundaries.
Not only a stunning rebranding with a new super cool band and packaging, the blend has been modified without forgetting the roots of the originally French marca. Therefore we were able to enjoy 3 vitolas, one of them is very trendy No.50.

Appearance : 4 out of 5 stars
I have reviewed few cigars released during the XIX festival Del Habano. All of them were of course extremely good looking. Shiny and oily wrappers. Habanos S.A., could not share a bad looking cigar to their guests. The quai d’orsay No. 50 follows the visual rules. This cigar is dressed by a stunning Colorado wrapper. What a beauty.
But not just the wrapper, as previously explained during the Quai d’Orsay corona claro review, the brand is revealing a new band. On this one, the cigar name will be presented, in this case the No.50. The luxury feeling of this new look is just sublime and I am completely loving it.

Construction : 4 out of 5 stars
First of all the cigar is perfectly rolled, packed with tobacco and with a smooth pre draw. A slight resistance which is to me necessary to enjoy a habanos properly. We have to deserve it, let’s say.

Flavor : 3.5 out of 5 stars
As you can read on my review of the Quai d’Orsay Coronas Claro, I enjoyed the new blend and was very pleased with this new life. I, therefore, have some high expectation for this trendy size that could launch the brand very high.
The first third wasn’t as great as the “younger brother”, some residue of ammoniac and a slight bitterness were hiding the flavours. The strength was very light and the draw extremely pleasant as expected. A hint of creaminess and crema (the small foam on top of an espresso) could be noticed, but nothing to incredible.

The second third started to be closer to what I expected, a light strength cigar with a high density of smoke, low acidity and slight creaminess remaining on the palate. The cigar isn’t evolving a lot but the bitterness starts to melt down allowing the blend to express itself better. A slight sweetness stays on the back of the palate which leaves you with a great feeling. However, the finish is very short and the flavours tend to disappear very quickly.

The last third stays on the same strength, flavours and aromas. The richness and thickness of the smoke is enjoyable and I can just imagine the blend to fully reveal itself in the future with high creaminess and sweetness.

Overall Rating : 3.5 out of 5 stars
I was so excited to smoke the Quai d’Orsay No.50 as I enjoyed the Coronas Claro. We all know the cigars realese at the festival are often (most of the time) too fresh. However, few of them didn’t express a slight hope for the future and were just bad cigars to me. The No.50 isnt one of them. Clearly you can feel the softness and balance the cigar already has. The flavours and aromas aren’t expressing fully but their presence is very promising. Not to forget the super sexy new band!

Camacho Check Six - Box

Camacho is proud to announce the latest addition to its Brotherhood Series, the new Camacho Check Six.

Built with the impenetrable character of the Original Corojo, Camacho Check Six pays tribute to the unbreakable bond between those who watch their brother’s six no matter what. In honor of those bold individuals who stand side by side to protect our freedom, Camacho deploys its latest addition to the Brotherhood Series with a cigar built from the legendary tobacco we fought to defend.

Camacho Check Six - Single

Backed by integrity and bound by virtue, this is one cigar that yields to no other. Celebrating those who prove themselves through actions, not words. A rare breed of individuals who stop at nothing to lay everything on the line for what matters most. Always doing what’s right, never what’s easy. Confirming that there are no limits when it comes to solidarity.

“We are very excited about this second release under our Brotherhood Series. While the concept was inspired by a common bond shared amongst the military brotherhood, it is also aspirational for many. We all have those people in our lives that we know have our back. By extension, it is also understood that you have theirs as well. This is the cigar to share with those special individuals,” said Dylan Austin, Vice President of Marketing for Davidoff of Geneva USA.

At the core of the new Camacho Check Six is a tri-country blend of Original Corojo, San Vicente and Criollo tobaccos. These powerful filler tobaccos combine to add a depth of strength, complexity and flavor to the overall experience. The addition of a Criollo 98 binder from Nicaragua amps up the pepper notes, while the Habana 2000 wrapper from Ecuador adds roundness and excellent combustion to the blend.

Camacho Check Six : Stats

Wrapper: Habana 2000 (Ecuador)
Binder: Criollo 98 (Nicaragua)
Filler: Criollo 98 (Nicaragua) / Estelí (Nicaragua) / San Vicente (Dominican Republic) / Original Corojo (Honduras)
Intensity: 4 of 5 (Medium to Full)

The new Camacho Check Six is packed with twenty Toro (6 x 50) sized cigars and features a shareable challenge coin on the lid of each box. Shipping begins in the US shortly after the 2016 IPCPR trade show and will extend across global markets in the first quarter of 2017.

Suggested Retail (US): $12.50 per cigar / $250.00 per box

Zander Greg New World

Zander-Greg, Inc., is celebrating its twenty years as a national distributor of tobacco products with a new, special edition New World boutique cigar line. The circumstances in which this cigar is offered are a rarity … it is a brand manufactured and owned by AJ Fernandez, but with a slightly “tweaked” blend that is solely Zander-Greg’s.

The New World/20th Anniversary cigar is manufactured by the Tabacaleras Fernandez factory in Estelí, Nicaragua. The company is operated by third-generation tabacalero A. J. Fernandez, whose grandfather first grew tobacco in pre-Castro Cuba.

Zander-Greg’s 20th Anniversary is available in the same four shapes as the New World … all are classically Cuban, but with 5/64” larger diameters. They are: Robusto (5″ x 55), Belicoso (5½” x 55), Toro (6½” x 55) and an extra-brawny Gordo (6″ x 60). The cigars are Nicaraguan puros … dark Nicaraguan wrapper, Jalapa binder, and a filler of Nicaraguan Ometepe, Condega and Esteli. The cigars are full-bodied, and have a flavor profile that includes coffee, pepper, wood and chocolate notes. An extraordinary shifting of nuances throughout the smoke reflect the complexity of this five-tobacco recipe.

All shapes are box pressed, even the tapered-head Belicoso. An eye-catching gold “20th” adorns a second band below the Fernandez “New World” band. The cigars are presented 21 to a traditional Cuban dress-up box. Manufacturer’s suggest retail pricing falls between $5.00 and $6.00, and they will appear in tobacco retailers’ stores this September.

Hoyo de Monterrey Le Hoyo de San Juan

The Hoyo de Monterrey brand sees an addition to the Le Hoyo line, a 54-ring gauge jawbreaker (by Cuban standards):

Le Hoyo de San Juan is the new heavy ring gauge vitola for a historic line that is reinventing itself and expanding the Serie Le Hoyo. It incorporates in its blend Seco and Ligero leaves coming from San Juan y Martínez, the historic denomination of origin where the brand was born in 1865, bringing to this new vitola the unique consistency and intensity that San Juan y Martínez soil confers to the leaves thar are grown there.

Le Hoyo Series was traditionally known for its slender and medium ring gauges (like the Hoyo du Député). The new Le Hoyo de San Juan vitola, sporting a 54 ring gauge, is characterized by its light flavor. It is an attractive option for those who like a lighter Habano that is delicate and aromatic, as well as exceedingly elegant and complex.

Hoyo de Monterrey Le Hoyo de San Juan

Le Hoyo de San Juan will initially be available in the brand’s classic Cabinet Selection or Slide Lid Box (SLB) of 25 and 10 units.

The boxes also include innovations in the brand’s image. A new adhesive papeleta -rectangular seal- on the short side of the box and also the white ribbon that adorns the boxes of 25 units that will help to identify this new Hoyo de Monterrey vitola.

Tienda Exclusiva by Willy Herrera

Drew Estate Tobacco Co. announced today the release of the first “Tienda Exclusiva by Willy Herrera”, a concept cigar by Willy Herrera. Made at La Gran Fabrica Drew Estate in extremely small batches, the Tienda Exclusiva line is specially crafted for one retailer per release, with only a few releases scheduled per year. The inaugural “Tienda Exclusiva by Willy Herrera” blend was produced for the owner of Barrister Cigars in Union, New Jersey, David Mallow, following the 2013 New Jersey Cigar Festival.

When asked about the blend, Willy Herrera responded from Estelí, Nicaragua: “This was one of the blends that I was working on through 2012 and 2013. David smoked it at the Festival and kept coming back for more. Eventually, he smoked every cigar I had brought, which I thought would be enough for the entire week! I knew he loved the blend and it felt right assigning it to him for my first Tienda Exclusiva.”

David Mallow, owner of Barrister Cigars, said that, “the ‘Tienda Exclusiva by Willy Herrera’ is a truly beautiful project that I am honored to be involved with. It’s no secret that Willy is one of the most talented tobacco blenders out there, and we can’t wait to have the cigar in our humidor.”

As stated previously, every “Tienda Exclusiva by Willy Herrera” blend is a limited quantity production cigar made at La Gran Fabrica Drew Estate. Jonathan Drew noted, “I recommend you don’t sleep on this one. These are one and done. Willy has a lot on his plate right now as Master Blender of La Gran Fabrica Drew Estate. As I’ve said before, ‘Boutique is in the Heart’ and Willy has spent so much time creating and experimenting with blends. We have some real gems out of the blends he has worked on. Now, it’s time to get them into production.”

The “Tienda Exclusiva by Willy Herrera” for Barrister Cigars is packed in 10-count boxes and will sell for $12.00 MSRP per cigar, plus applicable state taxes. They will be offered for sale on September 2nd from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM at a Barrister Cigars event in Union, New Jersey, with Willy Herrera and Jonathan Drew hosting the event.

Dunhill 1907

General Cigar announces the world premiere of 1907 by Dunhill®, a medium-bodied, four-cigar collection that will be available at fine cigar shops nationwide, and at premium tobacconists worldwide, beginning in May.

1907 by Dunhill marks the first full-time new Dunhill brand since its Signed Range was introduced in 2001, and commemorates the first box-pressed cigar in the entire Dunhill portfolio, with the range’s new Toro size.
